WATERLOO - James Allen "JA" Olson, 76, of Sparta, Wis., formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Feb. 19, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis., of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

He was born Aug. 4, 1934, son of Walter and Alice Erickson Olson. He married Joan Melloh on Oct. 10, 1964, in Sparta, and they later divorced.

Mr. Olson graduated from Sparta Senior High School in 1952, then served as a cook in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, with transition to the active U.S. Army. He began working for the Monroe County Highway Department in 1966 as a mechanic, retiring in 1990. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves as a diesel mechanic and served from 1981 to 1992.

Survived by his former wife of Sparta; a son, James J. (Julie) of Sparta; a daughter, Lori (Marcus) Volden of Sparta; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Jane Chapiewsky and Joyce Johnson, both of Sparta.

Preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Forest "Stuke" Johnson and LaVern "Chip" Chapiewsky.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Portland Lutheran Church, rural Cashton, Wis., with a private family burial at a later date. Visitation 5 to 7 p.m. today at Torkelson Funeral Home, Cashton, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church. The Sparta Honor Guard will provide full military honors.
