WATERLOO — Dixie L. Manley was born May 27, 1939, in Waterloo, the daughter of Clifford and Josephine E. (Casbon) Kraft.

She married Thomas L. Manley on Dec. 16, 1961, in Waterloo. Dixie graduated from Waterloo West High School 1957. She graduated from Allen School of Nursing with a licensed practical nursing degree. Dixie later returned to the University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a BA and earned her MA in education. She taught special education and retired in 2001. During her teaching career, she was honored with the Learning Disabilities Teacher of the Year award in 1998.

During Dixie's courageous battle with ovarian cancer, she was an inspiration to many. She was the first human to receive the re-engineered measles virus in an experimental clinical trial at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Dixie also appeared in several videos as a spokesperson for the Mayo Clinic. Her purpose was being involved in something that could possibly lead to helping others. She spoke at the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance as well as other organizations to help raise research dollars for the Mayo Clinic.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Manley of Cedar Falls; a son, John Manley of Phoenix; a daughter, Chris Phillips of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Jessica and Sarah Phillips and Sophia Manley; and a sister, Joan (Larry) Schuetz of Sunrise Beach, Mo.

Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, and beloved stepfather, Owen Gray.

Dixie had a deep love for her family, religion, friends and flowers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with inurnment at Buckingham Cemetery, Traer. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
