David Lyle Kline, 74, of La Porte City, died Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Allen Memorial Hospital. He was born May 26, 1934 in Waterloo, the son of Lyle Edward “Fritz” and Marie Wilder Kline. He married Patricia Mobley on February 14, 1959 in Louisville, KY.

He graduated from the University of Iowa and was an avid Hawkeye fan. David worked in various large cities throughout the U.S. as a group health insurance salesman, choosing to return to his beloved home state of Iowa in l982. He “retired” in December of 2002, though numerous organizations benefited from his volunteer work. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waterloo, the church Finance Committee, La Porte City Lions Club, Waterloo Elks Club, Republican National Committee, Masonic Trowel Lodge #216 AF&AM, El Kahir Shrine , La Porte City Telephone Company Board and the La Porte City Historical Society. He enjoyed singing in church choirs, playing the piano, card clubs, and struggling through his golf game with his brother Tom. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren whom he adored, baking cookies and organizing late night “snitching” escapades with them.

David is survived by his wife Patricia, of La Porte City; one son, David Lyle (Stefanie) Kline II of La Porte City; three daughters, Diana Kline (John Sendrowski) of Kansas City, MO, Carolyn Kline (Joseph) Martin of Bettendorf, Katherine Anne (Brian) Schmitz of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Anne Katherine and Samuel Paul Martin, and Rachel Marie, Audrey Lynn and Andrew David Kline; one brother, Thomas (Gayle) Kline of La Porte City and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Mobley of Lexington, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Waterloo, with burial in the West View Cemetery in La Porte City. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the La Porte City Funeral Home as well as one hour before the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
