CEDAR FALLS - Gwendolyn J. Backerman, 94, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, of natural causes.

She was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Orchard, daughter of Ernest Lincoln and Mary Maude Langdon Johnson. She married Harold R. Backerman on Sept. 2, 1937, in Ehler. He died Sept. 19, 2005.

Mrs. Backerman was a 1935 graduate of Waterloo East High School and worked at Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, for five years. She taught Sunday School and was a leader of the Girls Missionary Guild for many years at Calvary Baptist Church.

Survived by: two sons, David (Rolene) of Hope Mills, N.C., and Ernest (Jill) of Townsend, Ga.; a daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Trunnell of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Jim (Ellen) Trunnell, Katie (Bill) Heubner, Tyler (Katie) Trunnell, Megan (Aaron) Brummer, Jeffrey Backerman and Cheryl Patrick; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: three brothers, Raymond, Melven and Robert Johnson.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, Waterloo, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Public visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

Gwendolyn was an avid golfer and golfed on all of the courses in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area.
