WATERLOO - Helen Montgomery Maupin, 83, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 1, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

She was born April 3, 1927, in Durant, Miss., daughter of Ernest L. Ray and Bettie Ola Brown. She was raised by Cornell and Beatrice Matthews in Durant. She married Johnnie Dean Montgomery on Dec. 26, 1943, in Durant. He preceded her in death. She then married Conway Maupin on June 18, 1977, in Waterloo. He also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Maupin worked a variety of jobs, including St. Francis Hospital, Russell Lamson Hotel, President Hotel, domestic housework for lawyers, various janitorial work, a cook at Pathways and as a senior companion, retiring in 2007.

Survived by: a son, Danny D. Montgomery Sr. of Waterloo; three daughters, Betty Moore, Evelyn (Eddie) Riley and Johnnie Mae (Earl) Thomas, all of Waterloo; two stepsons, William Maupin of Kansas City, Mo., and Oscar Anderson Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; an adopted daughter, Melva Horton of Durant; a stepdaughter, Ruby (J.T.) Colins of Waterloo; a goddaughter, Maxine (Anthony) Tisdale; a special friend, Jethro Davis; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: her parents; and two granddaughters.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Payne Memorial AME Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and for an hour before services Saturday, all at the church. Sanders Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to the family at 420 Independence Ave., where they will receive friends.
