CEDAR FALLS — William Paul Virden, 88, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 23, at Hospice of the Valley, Scottsdale.

He was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Harrison County, Mo.

Mr. Virden survived the Great Depression and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a University of Missouri alumnus. He retired to Fountain Hills, Ariz., in 1990.

Survived by: his wife, Vivian; three sons, Steve (Cathy) of Monument, Colo., John (Adele) of Montrose, Colo., and David (Michael Boykin) of Seattle; a daughter-in-law, Barbara of Waukee; a sister, Ruth Ann Homan of Albany, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Doris Virden of Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Natalie of Iowa City and William of Fort Collins, Colo.

Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, Arizona.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers, may be directed to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Bill lived a life characterized by constant good cheer and optimism. He walked through life with an open heart and a generous spirit, which accounted for his many friends.
