At the age of 4 she moved with her family to Waterloo and resided there until August 1996. In 1959 she graduated from Waterloo East High School and married George A. In 1973 she was united with her soul mate, Carl "Doc" Pilcher, and to this union she acquired four stepsons, Roger, Theodore, Rodney and Jerald Pilcher.

She had many interests that occupied her time. Awanda was an avid bowler, and at one time represented the state of Iowa at an all-events tournament. She was on many winning teams and was inducted into the Bowler's Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Mo. She continued to bowl until 1998, to which she had attended 25 national tournaments. She was among some of the highest average bowlers in Waterloo.

Her hobbies included gardening, camping, cooking and decorating cakes. She won first and second place at National Dairy Cattle Congress two years in a row with her cake decorating. She also was a treasurer for all three churches that she attended faithfully: Linden Methodist, Immanuel Lutheran and Faith Lutheran. One of her many loves was her job as an optician, which occupied 38 years of her working life, starting with Dr. Jack Buchanan, Dr. Dennis Tieszen and Eye Care Associates.

In 1996 she and Doc moved to Warsaw, Mo. She then became a bank teller and CSR for Hawthorn Bank for 11 years, retiring in October 2009 due to ALS limitations. She was always known for her smile and warmness, thereby acquiring many friends throughout her life.

Awanda will be cremated by Kaysinger Crematory under the direction of the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Faith Lutheran Church, Warsaw. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation.
