WATERLOO - Norman W. Bergen, 93, of Waterloo, died Monday, Nov. 22, at Friendship Village Pavilion.

He was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Iowa City, son of Gerald W. and Ella Wurtzel Bergen. His mother died during his birth, and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Sarah Almeda. He married Dorothy Marie Mussett on Aug. 12, 1938, at Hagerman Baptist Church, Waterloo. She died Sept. 14, 2010.

Mr. Bergen was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He worked for Rath Packing Co., Lewis Motor Supply, Allen Supply in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids and Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. Later, he worked for Herman's Direct Furniture Supply in Waterloo and then became a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 15 years, retiring in 1976 after a serious car accident at work left him injured. He was a member of Hagerman Baptist Church.

Survived by: a daughter, Marsha (David) Sanders of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Gary (Karen) of Waterloo and Dan (Jan) of Warren, Mich.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Darell of Widefield, Colo.; and a sister, Joanne Andersen of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Russell.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel, with private family burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military honors accorded by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138, Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
