WATERLOO - Claude A. Gardner, 85, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Oct. 21, at Rosewood Estates.

He was born May 4, 1925, in Gilbertville, son of Peter and Ann Neisen Gardner, Sr. He married Marie Everding Nov. 19, 1946, in Gilbertville. She died July 31, 2008.

Mr. Gardner served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman 1st class, during World War II. He was owner and operator of Claude Gardner Construction Co. for more than 53 years.

Survived by: three sons, Ron (Cheryl) of Cookville, Tenn., David of Waterloo and Jim (Julie) of La Porte City; four daughters, Kay (Bob) Recker and Joan (Larry) Krienert, all of Waterloo, Barb (Mike) Delagardelle of Jesup and Cheryl (Brad) Kiecker of Fairfax, Minn.; 15 grandchildren, Jennifer and Jessica Gardner, Christopher (Angie) and Dawn Recker, Craig (Carolyn), Corey and Carrie Krienert, Daniel and Jeremy Delagardelle, Andrew and Angela Kiecker, Aubrie (Justin) Miller, Ashton, Avery and Aidan Gardner; six great-grandchildren, Francesca, Alexandria, Michael, Hunter and Kolton Krienert, and Dominic and Shelby Delagardelle and Saylor Miller; three sisters, Petronella Yarrington of Waterloo, Bernadette Ohrt and Ann (Dick) Kayser, both of Jesup.

Preceded in death by: three brothers, Pat (Betty), Don (Vivian) and Pete (Ruth); and three sisters, Rita (Joe) Homolka, Lucy (George) Duff and Doretta Menuey.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Full military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 138 and V.F.W. Post 1623. Public visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or St. Edward's Catholic Church.
