WATERLOO - Elsie Foufas, 88, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, Sept. 30, at Allen Hospital after an extended illness.

She was born July 18, 1922, in Waterloo, daughter of John G. and Marianthe Koletis Foufas.

She graduated from Waterloo East High School and lived her entire life in Waterloo. Miss Foufas was employed by Black's for approximately 30 years, starting as a clerk and advancing to store manager in downtown Waterloo and later at Casual Shop in Cedar Falls. She left her career to be a caretaker for her family for many years. She was employed by a bookstore and card shop until her retirement. Miss Foufas was a founding member of Highland Neighborhood Association and named Neighbor of the Month; was a founding member of the Daughters of Penelope serving as district governor and chapter president; was the author of many articles on mental health; a lifelong advocate for mental health issues; and was a lifelong and active member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

Survived by: two nieces, Kathleen (Larry) Hovey of Lubbock, Texas, and Marianthe (Ronnie) Bruniga of Farmington, Ill.; a nephew, John (Janis) Gartelos of Martinsville, Ill.; eight great-nieces and nephews; and five great-great-nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: two sisters, Ann and Elefteria; a brother, George J.; and a nephew, Peter.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South St. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

Miss Foufas was an avid reader who enjoyed crafts, conversation, and family.
