CEDAR FALLS - Elizabeth Jayne "Betty" Shiels, 79, of Faribault, Minn., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 2, at her home.

She was born March 29, 1931, in Manning, daughter of Spurgeon and Laura Schwebert Rapp. She married Richard Shiels July 28, 1951, in Baltimore, Md.

She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1948 and attended Iowa State Teachers College. She was a catalog supervisor at J.C. Penney for many years, retiring in 1992. She was the historian for District One Hospital Auxiliary.

Survived by: her husband; four children, Dr. Mark Shiels (fiancée Dr. Cheryl Schwalm), Barbara (Frank Reese) Shiels, Tim (Lorie) Shiels and Betsy (Robert) Vidmar; 10 grandchildren, Dr. Aaron, Kelly, Emily, Andrew, Katelin, Michael, Laura, Sarah, Allison and Jessica; seven great-grandchildren, Peter, Brooke, Samantha, Jacob, Anna, Nicholas and Lauren; a brother, John (and Beverly) Rapp; and a sister-in-law, Gracemary Rapp.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Robert.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Faribault, with burial in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, at a later date. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Faribault Area Hospice, Faribault.

Her church was very important to her. She was an avid wrestling supporter during the years her husband coached. She loved spending summers at the cabin, particularly when the grandkids were there.
