WATERLOO — Hewey Willhite, 88, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Sept. 16, at ManorCare Health Services of metastatic cancer.

He was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Eunice, Mo., son of Jesse and Alta Boster Willhite. He married Maudie Harris on Dec.17, 1943, in Waterloo. She died Nov. 26, 2006.

Mr. Willhite graduated from high school in Summersville, Mo., in 1940. He worked for Titus Manufacturing for 23 years, until Titus moved to Texas, then worked at John Deere for 14 years, retiring in 1982. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, making four trips to Europe on an escort vessel, and was a member of First Wesleyan Church for more than 53 years.

Survived by: a son, Duane (Deb) of Gresham, Ore.; a son-in-law, Claire Stohr of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Chuck Stohr, Tina Everding and Travis Hudson; five great-grandchildren, Randy Jr. and Darian Everding, Raychel Sali, Kyle Hudson and Tommy Blanchett; two sisters, Cleo Wait and Goldie Boleyn, both of Waterloo; and a brother, Lennis (Loretha) of Waterloo.

Preceded by in death by: a daughter, Marlene Stohr; two brothers, Dewey and Glen; and a sister Jewell Oman.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday at New Beginnings First Wesleyan Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by AMVETS Waterloo Post 19, Evansdale Post 31 and Iowa Army National Guard. Public visitation from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials: may be directed to Northeast Iowa Food Bank or to the church.
