PETER J. RECHTFERTIG

Peter J. Rechtfertig, 81, of 303 Iowa street, died at 4 a.m. Sunday at St. Francis Hospital where he had been a patient since he sustained a stroke on October 31, 1945

He was born October 28, 1864, in Chicago, the son of Peter and Margaret Rechtfertig, and came to Waterloo with the family when about 10 years old. With the exception of the years between 1888 and 1899, when he operated a business at Hawkeye, Ia., he had made Waterloo his home.

On September 29, 1887, he married Helen Salz, and the couple had four children. A daughter, Margaret, died in infancy, and a son Mark, preceded his father in death in 1939. The widow, two sons, Vincent, 216 Locust Street; and Gregory 127 Saxon street, 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren survive.

Rechtfertig, in association with Fred Sporle, operated a retail clothing and shoe store in Waterloo for 15 years early in the century. He was a member of the city council for six years, and after his retirement from business, was overseer of the poor in Black Hawk County in 1933 and 1934. In later years he worked as a desk clerk in the east side liquor store.

For many years he was a member of the Elks club. He was also affiliated with the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Father Luke Striegel, a nephew, will conduct the services at St. Joseph’s Wednesday at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The body will remain at the O’Keefe and Towne funeral home until time for the service.

The St. Joseph’s Rosary society will recite the rosary at the funeral home Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. At 8 p.m. the Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home to recite the rosary.
