WATERLOO — Cary Leon Purcell, 60, of Waterloo, died Monday, Aug. 23, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center.

He was born Aug. 8, 1950, in Jonesboro, Ark., son of Elmer and Charlotte Lang Purcell. On Aug. 17, 1985, he married Noreen O’Brien.

Mr. Purcell graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1968, and earned a welding certificate from Hawkeye Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy, then in the Navy Reserves. He worked as a post office clerk in Waterloo for 35 years and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, serving as a youth director and elder for 19 years.

Survived by: his wife; his mother of Waterloo; a brother, Larry (Carol) of Davenport; two sisters, Susan (Eric) Purcell and Paula (Steve) Collentine, both of Waterloo; his mother-in-law, Loretta O’Brien of Waterloo; a brother-in-law, Tim (Karen) O’Brien of New Orleans; four sisters-in-law, Mary Thomas of Rogers, Ark., Kathy (Frank) Fettkether of West Des Moines, Annette (Michael) Olejniczak of Waterloo and Monica (Steve) Nagel of Houston; an aunt, Rose Lang; an uncle, Jerry Lang; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceded in death by: his father; and an infant brother, Denny Gordon.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service.

Memorials: may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church Building Fund or Cedar Valley Hospice
