GILBERTVILLE — Eileen B. Schares, 83, of Gilbertville, died Monday, Aug. 23, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, of lung cancer.

She was born Jan. 5, 1927, south of Gilbertville, daughter of Al and Mary Reuter Pierce. She married Leo Schares Sept. 20, 1948, in Gilbertville. He died March 9, 2005.

Mrs. Schares was an Avon representative for 49 years. She was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the Rosary Society.

Survived by: two daughters, Karen (Steve) Rottinghaus of Brighton, Mich., and Kaye (Mike) McCallum of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don (Mary Ann) Pierce of Waterloo and Jim Pierce of Paris, Texas; and three sisters, Jan (Joe) Bruns of Cresco, Marci (Cletus) Schmit of Gilbertville and Alice (Larry) Barr of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Cindy Schares-Harms; a son, Bernard "Bernie" Schares; a grandson, Eric Schares; and a brother, Ray Pierce.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, where there will be a 3 p.m. Divine Mercy chaplet, a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Catholic Order of Foresters rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the church.

Eileen enjoyed selling Avon, meeting many new people and made lasting friends. She was very dedicated to her Catholic faith and cared very much that her children and grandchildren practiced their faith. She was loved by all who knew her, cherished by her family and will be missed by all.
