WATERLOO — Charles E. Nelson, 84, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Aug. 21 at Allen Hospital.

He was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Buffalo, Kan., son of Claude E. and Edith J. Harrington Nelson.

He married Rose Mary Nelson on Oct. 3, 1948, in Waterloo. She died Feb.17, 2008.

He was employed at Rath Packing Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1985. He was a Navy veteran, serving in World War II in the South Pacific.

Survived by: a son, David (Paula) Nelson of Tripoli; three daughters, Cecilia Nelson of Waterloo, Cheri (Randy) Lowe of Buckingham and Cathy (Bill) Rice of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Betty June Girard of Nebraska, Claudine Wilson of Kansas, Laura Lee (Herbert) Gruetzmacher of Oklahoma and Jodine Eberling of Arkansas; and four brothers, Bob (Sally) Nelson of Missouri, Joe Browne of Oklahoma, Bill (Eleanor) Browne of Oklahoma and Jackie Browne of Kansas.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, with inurnment in Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty–Waychoff–Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Charles and Rose Mary wintered in Texas for many years. He belonged to PT Boaters Inc. and enjoyed camping and anything to do with the outdoors. He enjoyed reunions with his former shipmates across the country. He was especially fond of going fishing. He loved to travel and visit his brothers and sisters, who lived out of state. He loved cars and spent years ferrying cars from various locations for local car dealerships.
