WATERLOO — Mary Catherine Scully, 96, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Aug. 22, at Windhaven Assisted Living Center, Cedar Falls, of natural causes.

She was born May 17, 1914, in Ottumwa, daughter of John and Rose Meany Huston. She married George D. Scully on May 12, 1937, in Ottumwa. He died March 18, 1995.

She attended St. Mary’s of the Woods College, St. Mary’s of Notre Dame University and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in journalism. She worked at the Iowa Press Citizen and for her husband’s realty business while he was in the Navy. She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church.

Survived by: a son, George D. (Mary) Scully Jr. of Waterloo; a daughter, Mary Jo Scully Klatt of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Scott (Tricia) Scully and Ben (Kristin) Scully, all of St. Louis, and Zachary Klatt and Karry Klatt, both of Des Moines; and five great-grandchildren, Zoe, Ryder, Oscar, McQuen and MacKenzie.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Bernard Huston.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 7 p.m. vigil, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Cedar Bend Humane Society.

Mary Cay spent her life dedicated to her husband, George, and her children, Mary Jo and George. Mary Cay was an intelligent, spirited woman who remained gracious to all who knew her to the end.
