WATERLOO - Eugene Aloysious "Gene" Schmitz, 81, died Friday, Aug. 20, at his home of natural causes.

He was born Nov. 7, 1928, in Gilbertville, son of Aloysious Joseph and Agnes Schaefer Schmitz. He married Marceline Kettman Oct. 11, 1950, in Gilbertville.

He was owner/operator of Gene Schmitz Masonry for 50 years, retiring in 1992.

Survived by: his wife; a son, Steve (Romy) Schmitz of Cedar Falls; four daughters, Susan (Steve) Wagner of Waterloo, Julie (Jim) Gardner of La Porte City, Lori (Greg) Leppert and Lisa (Jeff) Leppert, all of Lansing; 15 grandchildren, Justin (Cicely), Emily, Matt (Kelli) and Claire Wagner, Cassandra, Dakota, Dallas and Garrett Schmitz, Aubrie (Justin) Miller, Ashton, Avery and Aidan Gardner, Jillian, Aaron and Allyson Leppert; four great-grandchildren, Daetin, Gianna and Drey Wagner and Saylor Miller; a son-in-law, Mark Wagner of Lake Ozark, Mo.; a brother, Don (Katie) Schmitz of Washburn; and a sister, Lois (Lloyd) Griffith of Lansing.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Lynn Wagner; two brothers, Richard and Jimmy; and a sister, Geraldine.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Don Bosco Building Fund.
