MASON CITY - Alvin W. Bartholomew, 77, died Monday (Oct. 2, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. A Scripture wake service will begin at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Alvin W. Bartholomew Memorial Fund.

Alvin was born July 31, 1923, in Waterloo, the son of Barney and Laura (LaTier) Bartholomew. He graduated from Boone High School and boxed in the Flyweight Division of Golden Gloves from 1939-41. He became a three-time Golden Glove Champion and was named the 1941 World Amateur Flyweight Champion.

After serving in the Navy from 1941 to 1945, he married Rosanna Herzog on Aug. 3, 1946, in Mason City, with whom he raised six children.

Alvin worked for Iowa Kemper Insurance where he served as assistant claims manager, retiring in 1985. After retirement he enjoyed golfing and time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City and a member of the VFW and American Legion. He also was a member of Highland Golf Course for 45 years. He also did volunteer work in preparing taxes for AARP.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Rosanna of Mason City; four sons, Craig (Karen) Bartholomew of Mason City, Terry (Theresa) Bartholomew of Waukee, Jeffrey (Kandee) Bartholomew of Mason City and Paul Bartholomew of Mason City; two daughters, Deborah (Robert) Ballantyne of Mason City and Wanda (Nicholas) Hodak of Mason City; one sister, Colleen (Robert) Wilbert of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren, Chad Bartholomew, Krista Bartholomew, Michelle Bartholomew, Lori Williams, Jenifer Smith, Julie Marlow, Frank Hodak, Noah Hodak, Nicolette Hodak, Ben Bartholomew, Jacob Bartholomew, Katee Bartholomew, Alicia Bartholomew, Tyler Bartholomew, Alex Bartholomew and Matthew Bartholomew; nine great grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanda Reiter.
