WATERLOO - Richard C. "Dick" Dotson, 72, of Waterloo, died Saturday, July 31, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Feb. 22, 1938, in Waterloo, son of William and Margaret Morris Dotson. He married Betty Denning July 18, 1959, at St. John's Catholic Church in Waterloo.

He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1957 and received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1962. He taught and coached at West High for 35 years, retiring in 1996. The couple started Custom Pools & Spas in 1976. He refereed for Boys State Basketball Tournament and College Big 8 Basketball. He was a member of East High School Athletic Hall of Fame, UNI Athletic Hall of Fame, UNI Track Alumnus of the Year and he chaired the American Heart Association Heart Walk.

Survived by: his wife; a son, Jeff (Patti) Dotson of Waterloo; a daughter, Julie (Jim) Long of Danville, Calif.; four grandchildren, Tyler, Lana, Courtney and Ryan; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon and Curtis; two brothers, John "Jack" (Sherry) Dotson of Upland Hills, Calif., and Bill "Beets" (Linda) Dotson of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Diane Smith of Cedar Falls; a sister-in-law, Sue Dotson of Albuquerque; and two brothers-in-law, Jim (Sandy) Denning of Waterloo and William (Sherry) Folks of Branson, Mo.

Celebration of life Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Valley Community Church. Mr. Dotson donated his body to the Mayo Hospitals and Clinics Department of Anatomy.

Memorial Fund: will be established.
