CEDAR FALLS - Harriet Arnold Jessen, 85, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, July 28, at Sartori Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 11, 1925, in Rensselaer, Ind., daughter of Harry J. and Helen M. Meader Arnold. She married Verner M. Jessen June 26, 1948, in Valparaiso, Ind. He died Dec. 7, 2002.

In addition to being a homemaker, Mrs. Jessen was an exercise instructor with the YWCA, Cedar Falls Recreation program, Covenant and Sartori hospitals. She was one of the first in the state of Iowa to teach the Body Recall exercise program for seniors. She was a volunteer at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Sartori Hospital and served as volunteer coordinator for the World's Window for over 20 years. She was a 2010 recipient of the Governor's Volunteer Award and an Olympic torch bearer in Cedar Falls for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Cross Country Torch Run.

Survived by: two sons, Kyle (Goldy) of Park City, Utah, and Alan (Margaret) of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Becky Lang (Mark) of Johnston; and four grandchildren, Amadea, Toby, Rob and Rachel.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Elizabeth Strauss; and two brothers, Robert and Elvin Arnold.

Memorial Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with inurnment in Fairview Cemetery. Public visitation from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Richardson Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Memorials: may be directed to the church, the World's Window or Self-Help International, in lieu of flowers.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Sartori Hospital and Cedar Falls Lutheran Home for the loving care of their mother.
