Death of a Pioneer.

At 2 p.m. yesterday Mr. E. F. Pendleton died at the residence of his son-in-law, J. M. Grant, in East Waterloo township, about two miles north of the city. He had been in poor health for some time, but the immediate cause of his death was an attack of the grip with which he had been suffering for the past eight days.

Deceased was 80 years old. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and came to this county in 1854. For thirty-nine years he resided here and saw Waterloo grow from a collection of pioneer cabins to the busy, bustling city of today. Along with the other early settlers he suffered the privations of the early days and lived to see the prosperity of the present and to enjoy the contrast between the times of 1854 and 1893. Living here for such a length of time, he became well known to many all over the county and all will learn of his demise with genuine regret.

Oct. 4, 1837, deceased was married and his wife died in this city June 6, 1886, at the age of 71 years. They were the parents of seven children, of whom two sons and two daughters survive. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. next Sunday from the residence of Mr. Grant, and another early settler of this county will be laid at rest in Fairview cemetery.

The children who survive him are: E. R. Pendleton, of this city; Mrs. J. M. Grant, living two miles north; Mrs. Zimri Streeter, living between Waterloo and Cedar Falls, and Fred Pendleton, livin in Neligh, Nebraska. Gus. Pendleton, another son, died a year ago last April. Deceased also leaves two brothers, one, Jackson Pendleton, living at Salt Lake, and the other, C. H. Pendleton, in Ohio. A sister, the youngest of the family, lives in Kansas. Another sister is dead.
