Death Summons Came Suddenly

Wm. Staughton Cobb Died of Heart Failure This Morning

A Resident Fifty Years

Lived In Waterloo About Forty-Five Years.

Taken Sick Yesterday Afternoon -- Rallied From Attack, But Stricken Again in Night -- Funeral Saturday.

Wm. Staughton Cobb, a resident of Waterloo and Blackhawk county for the past forty-nine years, died quite suddenly this morning at the family home at 1200 Commercial street. The direct cause of death was heart failure and complications of pneumonia. Mr. Cobb has been in poor health for several months. Yesterday afternoon he was taken suddenly ill, but rallied late in the afternoon. He was at his son's grocery store, a block distant from his home, for some time during the afternoon. In the night he was taken ill again, and this morning at a few minutes past 8:00 o'clock he passed away.

A Long Time Resident.

Mr. Cobb was probably among the best and widely known men in the city, having come to the county in the year 1856. he was born in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, June 9, 1824, which gives his age at eighty-one years. His early childhood was spent in the place of his birth, until the family moved to New York. Here Mr. Cobb was married to Miss Anna Eliza Lingenfelter, who with two children survives him. The children are E. S. Cobb, of this city, who conducts a grocery store on Jefferson street, and one daughter, Mrs. E. R. Pendleton, also of Waterloo. One daughter, Alice, died in the year 1865, and was buried in Elmwood cemetery.

The year 1856 the Cobbs came west and settled on a tract of land three and one-half miles south of the city, and after a residence of a few years there they moved to Waterloo. Later they returned to the farm, and forty-five years ago they returned to Waterloo, and deceased has made this city his home from that time until his death. Thirty years of this time he has resided in the present place of residence at 1200 Commercial street.

Mr. Cobb was a member of the Odd Fellows order when he lived in New York, but never transferred his membership to Iowa. The funeral will be at the house Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
