WATERLOO — The Rev. John R. Hussmann, 81, of Villa Raphael, Dubuque, died Wednesday, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

He was born Sept. 21, 1928, in Waterloo, son of Arthur F. and Margaret C. Walsh Hussman.

He received a bachelor's degree from Loras College, Dubuque, and completed seminary training at St. Mary's, Baltimore. He was ordained in Christ the King Chapel, Loras College on May 29, 1954, by The Most Rev. Loras T. Lane, D.D. He served the following parishes: associate pastor at St. Michael, Nashua, 1954; Church of the Nativity, Dubuque, 1954-55; Church of the Visitation, Stacyville, 1955-58; St. Patrick Church, Cedar Falls, 1958; administrator at St. Patrick Church, Colesburg, 1958-59; associate pastor at St. Patrick Church, Tama, 1959-64; Sacred Heart, Maquoketa, 1964-69; Sacred Heart, Monticello, 1969-70; pastor at St. Patrick, Buffalo Center, 1970-80; and at St. Joseph Church, Prairieburg, 1980 until retirement in 1989. After retirement, he was archdiocesan director of Legion of Mary.

Survived by: three nephews, Ben (Kristin) Hussmann of Evanston, Ill., Matt (Deb Mayberry) Hussmann of Washington, D.C., and Pete (Julie Bak) Hussmann of Newton; a niece, Mary Hussmann of Canton, N.Y.; three special friends, Charles McCormick, Del O'Hea and Patricia Flores, all of Dubuque.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Dr. Arthur Hussmann.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Waterloo. Public visitation from 8:30 a.m. until service time at St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, is in charge of arrangements.

Father John lived at the Villa Raphael from 1983 until 2008. He enjoyed his time at the villa with his brother priests. He was known for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin and the Power of Prayer. He will be fondly remembered also for his wonderful sense of humor and his kindness to everyone. Special thanks to Stonehill Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque for the kindness and care shown to Father John during his time with them.
