Mildred J. Johnston, 89, of Waterloo, died at Lakeview Landing on Friday, July 9, 2010.

Mildred Jeanette Johnston was born April 9, 1921, in Forest City, the daughter of John F. "Jack" and Alice Severson Johnston.

Mildred graduated from Forest City High School and attended Waldorf College in Forest City, the University of Colorado, and University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, where she received a BA degree in elementary education in 1954 plus extensive graduate work.

She was a teacher of elementary education for 42 years: Havelock, Thompson, Clarion, and 36 years in Waterloo at Whittier School and later in West Intermediate School, retiring in 1983.

Mildred was a Life Member of the Iowa Congress of P.T.A.; a Life Member of I.S.E.A.; Past President of Waterloo Business and Professional Woman's Club; Secretary and Memorial Chairman of the Waterloo Woman's Club; Foundation Chair, Publicity and Historian Co-Chairs of Sons of Norway; Secretary of Friendship Village Auxiliary; Secretary, Chapter FE, P.E.O.; and Pi Lambda Theta.

She was a long time member of First United Methodist Church where she served as secretary and Mission Coordinator of Social Action of UMW. She was also a member of Church Women United.

Mildred enjoyed being with her family and planning events, traveling, sporting events, gardening, fishing and keeping active.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. "Jack" Johnston of Forest City; brothers Robert of Forest City, Maynard "Chip" of Belmond, and Virgil of Osage; and longtime friend Donna Shreve.

She is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Alpha Sandage and husband Duane of Ames; Mrs. Sylvia Kleen and husband James of North Mankato, Minn.; three sisters-in-law: Florence Johnston of Forest City, Shirley Johnston of Belmond and Antoinette Johnston of Osage; 10 nieces and nephews: Joanne (Mark) Holst, Janet (Greg) Hall, John (Judy) Johnston; Nancy (Ron) Ginapp; Scott Sandage, Suanne Sandage, Steve (Danielle) Sandage; Robert Kleen, Tom Kleen, and Kathy Kleen as well as many great nieces and nephews; and Services: 10 a.m. Monday, July 12 at Locke Funeral Home; burial at 2:30 p.m. in Oakland Cemetery, Forest City, Iowa; Visitation 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home (319) 233-6138; memorials to Waterloo First United Methodist Church or Friendship Village Auxiliary

WATERLOO - Mildred J. Johnston, 89, of Waterloo died Friday, July 9, 2010, at Lakeview Landing.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home (319-233-6138). Memorials to Waterloo First United Methodist Church or Friendship Village Auxiliary.
