ESSEN, BLEAKER, EIFFLER, MATHES, EWING, WILSON, DIXON

WATERLOO - Darrell Dean Essen, 68, of Lander, Wyo., formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, June 16, at Wyoming Medical Center, Casper, Wyo., after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 18, 1942, in Iowa City, son of Darrell Joseph and Arlene Bleaker Essen. He married Cheryl "Sheri" Eiffler on Dec. 19, 1969, in Morrison, Ill.

Mr. Essen graduated from Grundy Center High School, then served in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees battalion from 1961-1964. He also served at the onset of the Vietnam conflict. He was employed with John Deere Tractor Works and worked most of his 33 years as a machine maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1998. He later worked for the Cedar Falls Parks Department for four years.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, Darrell Jr. of Oxnard, Calif., and Troy (Dawn) of Waterloo; two daughters, Tessia Mathes of Hastings, Neb., and Heidi (Mike) Ewing of Moline, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Derek, Sarah, Brittany, Brandi, Nathan, Justine and Kallypso; a great-granddaughter, Jade; his mother of Grundy Center; and two sisters, Judy (Herb) Wilson of Marshalltown and Janet (Don) Dixon of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by: his father; and a granddaughter, Melissa Mathes.

Memorial Services: 1 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service, West Ridgeway, preceded by an hour of visitation. Scattering of cremains will be at a later date.

Darrell loved gardening and playing with his grandchildren. He also liked hunting, fishing, refinishing furniture and antiques. After living in Waterloo for 36 years, Darrell and Sheri moved to Lander, where he did more fishing and driving his Jeep in the mountains.
