HELGESON, RUDY, GAVIN, STOKES, BECK, MEHMEN

CEDAR FALLS — James William Helgeson, 75, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, May 29, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, after a long illness.

He was born Aug. 14, 1934, at Chimney Rock, Wis., son of William B. and Marie Rudy Helgeson. He married Korene Gavin Sept. 15, 1956, in Wisconsin, and they later divorced. He married Diana Stokes Beck Dec. 31, 1988, in Cedar Falls. She died March 13, 2001.

Mr. Helgeson served in the U.S. Army and worked at John Deere Tractor Works, Waterloo, for 30 years. He later worked at GMAC for five years and MET Para Transit for several years. He was a charter member of the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association and was a member of both the UAW and the Transit Union.

Survived by: three sons, Mike (Carol Bergman) of Cedar Falls, Kevin (Deenese) of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Patrick (Cheryl) of Lakeville, Minn.; a daughter, Maureen (Ron) Mehmen of Plainfield; seven grandchildren; two stepsons, David (Ellen) and Nels Beck, both of Waterloo; a brother, Jerry (Carrie) of Rosemont, Minn.; and special friend, Joan Adams of Charles City.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a sister, Betty Gavin; and a stepson, Thomas Nels Beck.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Hudson, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the family at 1825 W. 12th St., Cedar Falls 50613, the Salvation Army, or Cedar Valley Hospice.
