WATERLOO - Gerald "Bill" Gates, 72, of Waterloo, formerly of Minneapolis, died Thursday, May 27, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Dec. 15, 1937, in Waterloo, son of Clifford and Elsie Lloyd Gates. Kenneth L. Robinson, his companion of 47 years, died Feb. 4, 2008.

Mr. Gates was a chef at Mayflower Seafood Restaurant in Minneapolis and a member of St. James AME in St. Paul, Minn.

Survived by: seven brothers, Clifford of Waterloo, LaVerne (Jeanette) of Hanover, Pa., Don (Shirley) of Aurora, Mo., Kenny, Ronnie, Larry (Annie) and Dennis, all of Waterloo; three sisters, Barbara Davis of Waterloo, Jo Ann Hanley of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Karen Moore of Waterloo; and 10 godchildren, three of which he raised, Ivy Crenshaw, Gerald Martin and Noel Martin.

Preceded in death by: three brothers, Gary, Robert and John; three sisters, LaVonne Rochholz, Betty Englehardt and Sally Gates.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home. Burial 11 a.m. Saturday in Oakland Cemetery, St. Paul, Minn. Local public visitation for two hours before services Thursday at the funeral home. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Spielman Mortuary, St. Paul. The family is receiving friends at 824 Cedar Bend, Waterloo.
