Death Message Stops Rejoicing

Mrs. Emil Carroll Hears of Soldier Husband's Death While Anticipating His Early Return.

When news of the armistice signing came to Waterloo Monday morning there was universal rejoicing over the prospects of early return of loved ones and no one was more jubilant than Mrs. Emil Carroll, whose husband, called in a June draft, was serving in France. She went as usual to her post at the Powers Manufacturing company, resolved to do her share in celebrating the occasion and entered heartily into the jubilation which was general.

But while she was planning her part in the celebration she received a telephone message from her mother, advising of the death in France of her husband, and the message which cancelled all her plans served also to darken the day's pleasure for her fellow employees.

Pvt. Carroll died of pneumonia, the war department's telegram advised. He had been in France one month. Previous to being called in the draft of June 26 he had been employed with the Smith, Lichty & Hillman Co. He received his training at Camp Dodge.
