WATERLOO — Roger Franklyn Peterson, 81, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, May 13, at Pine Crest Residential Living, Sturgeon Bay.

He was born June 20, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, son of Benjamin Harrison and Eda A. Swenson Peterson. He married Mary E. Van Vliet on Feb. 23, 1957, at Pella Second Reform Church. She died Oct. 12, 2003.

Mr. Peterson graduated from Coe College and the University of Iowa School of Law. He was a partner with Butterfield, Ball, Beekman and Peterson, elected to Black Hawk county attorney from 1967-68 and became chief judge of Iowa’s First Judicial District in 1972. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-52 in Europe. He was a member of Hope United Church of Christ, Sturgeon Bay Rotary Club and the Board of Adjustment.

Survived by: three sons, Bruce (Susan) of Boston, Jeff (Jill) of Detroit and Justin (Kyle) of Denver, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Simon, Brandon, Breanna, Lydia and Ben.

Services: were May 17 at Hope United Church of Christ, Sturgeon Bay, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Pella, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Huehns Funeral Home, Sturgeon Bay, assisted the family.

Memorials: may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
