WATERLOO — Jim Wheeler, 78, of Waterloo, formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday, May 3, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Jan. 29, 1932, in Oskaloosa, son of Carl and Ethel Heaverlo Wheeler.

Mr. Wheeler graduated from Oskaloosa Senior High, then served in the U.S. Air Force. While in the Air Force he took special training to be a baker, and later worked in Des Moines as a baker. He worked as a milkman in the Des Moines area; independently sold car bumpers; then operated a tool van, a business that grew into Wheeler’s Auto Body Supply, which he sold in 1990. He then opened "Wheels For You" car lot until the late 1990s.

Survived by: his wife, Linda Newman; three sons, James of Ottumwa, Carl (Sherri) of Waterloo and Brian of Newton; a daughter, Sandra Lynn Wheeler of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Carolyn (David) Bump of Missouri and Bonnie Thomas of Russellville, Ky.

Preceded in death by: a grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Bates Funeral Chapel, with burial in Friends Cemetery, both in Oskaloosa. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Oskaloosa American Legion, VFW and DAV. Public visitation for an hour before services Thursday at the funeral chapel.
