WATERLOO — James M. Dirkes, 55, of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, May 1, of natural causes.
He was born Jan. 14, 1955, in Waterloo, son of Leonard and Margaret Geater Dirkes. He married Sandra M. Zuck on Oct. 6, 1973, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Evansdale. She died March 18, 2008.
Mr. Dirkes was employed with Zeidlers Inc. for 31 years, until his retirement.
Survived by: a son, Brian (Monica) of Waterloo; a daughter, Robin (Jody) Fankhauser of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, Darrin, Crystalynn, Danielle, Antony, Destiny, Devon, Madison and Sydney; five brothers, Don Dirkes and Tom, Larry and Harvey (Debbie) O’Connell, all of Waterloo, and Randy O’Connell of Gladbrook; four sisters, Irene (Marv) Engel, Ruth (Ron) Rowe and Tammy (Stan) Halverson, all of Waterloo, and Shirley (John) Lambertson of Iowa Falls; six brothers-in-law, Bill (Martha) and Keith Zuck, both of Waterloo, Steve Zuck of Arizona, Mike (Betty) and Tom Zuck, both of Bondurant, and Rod Zuck of Florida; three sisters-in-law, Peggy (Jeff) Kyle and Becky Blackmer, both of Florida, and Sharon (Pete) Freeman of Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: his parents; his foster parents, Kenneth and Bertha O’Connell; a brother, Al O’Connell; a sister, Mary-Lou Dirkes; a grandson, Michael Dirkes; his mother and father-in-law, Merle and Clementine Reiter Zuck Sr.; a brother-in-law, Merle Zuck Jr.; and three nephews, Michael Hruska, Timothy Zuck and Chad O’Connell.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
