WATERLOO - Ruby Mae Gates, 76, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, April 20, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

She was born April 10, 1934, in West Point, Miss., daughter of Cleveland Young and Gertrude Petty. She married A.C. Gates. He preceded her in death.

She was formerly employed as a cook at the Town and Country Restaurant in Rock Island, Ill.

Survived by: two daughters, Quantella and Barbara Gates, both of Waterloo; five stepdaughters, JoAnn Gates of Waterloo, Genevieve Sisk, of Waterloo, Delores (Preston) Hoskins of Rochester, Minn., Pam Gates of Racine, Wisc., and Lisa (Stephen) Stevens of Waterloo; three sisters, Laura Randall of Rock Island, Ill., Viola Powell of Maben, Miss., and Artifical Walker of Indianapolis; a brother, Tommy Young of Detroit; five adopted children, Deondra (York) Gates of Indianapolis, Kisha Gates, Jermaris Gates, Tamera Gates and Derell Gates, all of Waterloo; 28 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: her husband; two daughters, Annie and Emma; a brother, Robert Young; and three grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call Sanders Funeral Service from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
