WATERLOO - Dr. James D. Collins Jr., 77, of Waterloo, died March 11 in Clearwater, Fla.
He was born June 28, 1932, in Gillette, Wyo., son of James D. Sr. and Beulah Ihnen Collins. He married Margaret Weber on April 26, 1958, in Norfolk, Neb.
Dr. Collins graduated from Omaha South High School in 1950 and received his bachelor's degree from University of Nebraska in 1954. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1958, served as an intern in Tacoma, Wash., from 1958 to 1959, and completed his residency at Madison General Hospital from 1959 to 1963. He served for two years at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas. He was a physician at Allen Memorial Hospital for 27 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. He served as chairman of the Iowa Medical Examiner's board of directors from 1994-97. In 1986 he received the Ben Whitaker award from the Iowa Medical Society for medical education. He was a founding member of the Black Hawk Tennis Club and started the Retired Physicians Group at Allen Hospital.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Jim (Ann Woessner) of Shoreview, Minn., and Steve (Lynn Svoboda) of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; a daughter, Brenda (Todd Mavis) of Poway, Calif.; eight grandchildren, James, Mason, and Sean Collins, Lauren Woessner, Lindsay and Kylie Mavis, Rachel and Mitchell Collins; and a cousin, Susie Schotte of Nebraska.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Jerry Collins.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home.
Memorials: may be directed to Allen Hospital-Laboratory Sciences Scholarship, Waterloo Public Library or the University of Nebraska Foundation.
