WATERLOO - Karen Kay Hatton, 69, of West Des Moines, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Hospice of Central Iowa's Kavanagh House after a short battle with cancer.

Karen was born Jan. 28, 1941, in Waterloo, daughter of Robert and Mary K. Bartz. She married Donald James Hatton on Feb. 12, 1960; they later divorced.

Karen graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1958 and was employed by Northwestern Bell (Qwest) for 28 years. Karen moved to West Des Moines in 1984, continuing her job with Qwest. She was a lifetime member of the Communications Workers of America as well as the Telephone Pioneers of America.

The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Buroker and his staff, the oncology department, staff and nurses of Methodist Hospital, with special thanks to Edra Fouts, oncology coordinator and friend, and to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Karen had three siblings, Bob (Jerldine) of Waterloo and Nancy (Orlan) Ott of Cedar Falls. She was preceded in death by a brother, David (Deb) of Lakeville, Minn. in 2003.

Karen and Donald had three children, Michael (Dawn) of Waterloo, Michaelle (Dan) Bown of West Des Moines and Melissa of Weatherford, Okla. She also is survived by five grandchildren, James, son of Michael; Cory, Sam and Lauren, children of Michaelle and Dan; and Abigail, daughter of Melissa. Karen also leaves behind her best friend and constant companion, Audrey Petersen, as well as her loving cat Annie.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 25, at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. Visitation will be for an hour before services. A special committal service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 30, in Waterloo at Memorial Park Cemetery, 3430 W. Fourth St., Waterloo.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Lutheran Church of Hope or to Hospice of Central Iowa.
