WATERLOO - Merle Francis Thompson, 84, of Waterloo, died at his home Saturday, March 13, of cancer.

He was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Elk River, Minn., son of Otto and Edna Thompson. He married Dolly "Gladys" Heggebo in 1947; she died in 2004. He married Wanda Gray in 1957; she died in 1986.

Mr. Thompson retired from Rath Packing Co. and was actively involved in the AFL-CIO. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Survived by: four daughters, Kathlyn Dettmer, Mary (Steve) Koehler of Winona, Minn., Jollene (Chuck) Slater and Jovita (Bob) Long, both of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Barbara Folkers of Texas; two sons, Kevin of Des Moines and David (Patrice) of Milan, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, Jerome; two sisters, Mabel Lightfoot and Thelma Vallentyne; and three grandchildren.

Memorial celebration: will be held at a later date.
