WATERLOO — Betty Lou West, 93, of Waterloo, formerly of Ankeny, died at Rosewood Estates on Monday, March 8, 2010, following a recent illness. She was born Oct. 30, 1916, in Des Moines, daughter of Edwin and Lillian Powell Dawson, the youngest of four children. She lived on the east side of Des Moines near what is now Grandview College. Her father had his own business selling cars as Dawson Motor Co. Early in life, he worked as a blacksmith, shoeing horses for Flynn Dairy delivery wagons. Betty graduated from Waterloo East High School and a year later, in 1935, married Everett West of Ankeny. They lived in Ankeny, where Everett was an auctioneer and also operated a trucking business with his father. In 1953 they moved to the family farm near Elkhart and later retired in Ankeny. Since 2006, she resided at Friendship Village, Waterloo.

Betty loved visiting with friends and neighbors. Her favorite thing was brewing coffee and having people in, anytime and many times a day. Her specialty was making pies and passing them around to neighbors. She seldom failed to digest the newspaper and loved watching Drake, UNI, ISU and SUI sports on TV.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Stephen Brandt; a daughter-in-law, Kathie West; a brother, Richard; and two sisters, Helen and Alice. She is survived by a daughter, Sheryl (Joe) Brandt of Waterloo; a son, Ted West of Barrington Hills, Ill.; four grandchildren, Laura (Bill) Noecker, Mark Brandt, Angie (Roger) Standrige and Kristin West; and three nieces, Patty (Dean) Winchell and Ronda (Merrill) Beck, all of Norwalk, and JoAnn (Myron) Holmgren of Hurst, Texas.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Hospice Compassuss

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 12, at the Geneseo United Methodist Church, rural Buckingham. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church.
