Last Letter From Corp. Ferguson

The last letter received from Corp. Floyd Ferguson, who was killed in action Nov. 11, was dated Sept. 17. In it he tells his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Ferguson, that he is resting back of the lines and does not know when his command will see action again. "They are still running Jerry back to his own land." he says. "They have captured a lot of prisoners lately. One Yankee division got 4,000 prisoners in two days and advanced over 15 kilometers. That isn't bad for two days. We all look for a break in Germany most any day but it is hard telling what they will do and what they won't do. It will be a happy day for us if we live thru this war and ever reach the states. You can hear the boys saying what they will do when they get back.

"Well, Jerry was over last night and paid us a visit. He also left a few bombs at one of the towns right near us. From what I heard today he didn't do much damage. He sure kept us awake for a while. I suppose he will be back tonight but we are wishing him bad luck and a hard fall."

Letter Revives Hope For Life

Corp. Floyd E. Ferguson, Who Was Reported Dead, Believed Living by His Captain.

Corp. Floyd E. Ferguson, who was reported as killed on the last day of fighting, was alive in December, if information received by his mother, Mrs. R. C. Ferguson, from the captain of his company, is correct. The communication, received yesterday, follows:

"Mrs. R. C. Ferguson, Waterloo, Ia. Dear Madam: Replying to yours of Dec. 14, just recieved, would state that your son, Corp. Floyd E. Ferguson, was wounded Sept. 26 on Mautfaucon Hill and sent back to the hospital.

"One of my other boys, just back from the hospital, said he saw him about a month ago at Mars, France, in one of the many base hospitals there and that he was getting in good shape. I cannot see why you have not had any word from him. Yours truly,
"M. W. Haney,
"Capt. 39th Inf. Comdg. Co. A."

The war department had sent official announcement of the death of Corp. Ferguson, giving the location of his grave and all the usual data. Papers bearing on the federal insurance were made out and forwarded, but nothing further has been heard from the authorities. Appeals have been made thru several sources for information.

War Hero Honored With Bronze Tablet

Patriotic services and the unveiling of a bronze tablet to the memory of Floyd E. Ferguson will take place in Grace M. E. church Sunday evening. It is expected that the local American Legion and officers will attend in a body. Taps will be sounded by the bugler and patriotic music played at intervals. Addresses will be given by George Weilein, Howard Rouse and H. M. Reed. The tablet will be unveiled by M. L. Bowman.

Floyd E. Ferguson, while one of many boys from Grace church to take part in the world war, was the only one who gave his life. He was a corporal and was killed in action during the last few hours of the war on the Argonne-Meuse front, Nov. 11, 1918. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Ferguson, 708 Independence avenue. His father died within the last year.
