WATERLOO — Eva Mae Minikus, 89, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 23.

She was born Oct. 2, 1920, in Springfield, Ill., daughter of Amos and Ruth Adwell Gates. She married William Headrick on June 2, 1941. He died Sept. 30, 1970. She married Arnold Minikus on June 14, 1974 . He died May 17, 2009.

Mrs. Minikus was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. WACS from 1943 to 1945 as a drill sergeant and bugler. She worked as a waitress and hostess at the Waterloo Elks Club for 31 years.

Survived by: two daughters, Sharon (Ken) Loftus of Evansdale and Diann Blitsch of Oelwein; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Hart and Pat Sablotny, both of Springfield, and Rose (Otto) Groth of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Teresa Corwin; two sons, Bill Headrick II and Donald Minikus; three sisters, Nellie Ferguson, Irene Schaive and Mary Cole; and four brothers, Jess, Ed, Jim and Duke Gates.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Cedar Bend Humane Society.
