DUNKERTON - Cletus L. Steffen, 78, of Dunkerton, died Friday, Jan. 22, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

He was born Feb. 1, 1931, in rural Black Hawk County, near Dunkerton, son of Joseph Nicholas Steffen and Mathilda "Tillie" Appolonia Meier. On Jan. 10, 1956, he married Margaret Ann McGarvey at St. Mary's of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Eagle Center.

Mr. Steffen and his wife operated Cletus Steffen Trucking and also farmed. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War.

He was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church-Barclay, rural Dunkerton, Knights of Columbus Council 700 of Waterloo, Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville, and a very proud member of the National Farmers Organization.

Survived by: his wife; seven sons, Kenneth (Brenda), Dan (Wanda) and Dale (Audrey), all of Dunkerton, Kevin (Jeanette) and Joseph (Renee), both of Waterloo, Robert (Wendy) of Dewar and Randall (Kara) of Liverpool, N.Y.; five daughters, Karen (Mark) Stueland of Tipton, Donna (Steve) McNulty of Janesville, Colleen (Chris) Jensen of Amana, Kathleen (Dale) Stiles of Liverpool and Sara (Eric) Shook of Urbana, Ill.; 30 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six brothers, J. Richard and Alfred, both of Dunkerton, Norbert (Betty) and Sylvester (Felicitas), both of New Hampton, the Rev. Arnold, S.V.D, of Papua, New Guinea, and Ralph of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; a sister, Sister Justina Steffen, O.S.F. of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Betty Steffen of Ames.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a granddaughter, Jamie Marie Jensen; a brother, Vincent; a sister, Sister Samuel Steffen, O.S.F.; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Steffen and Lillian Steffen.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Dunkerton. Military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville. Public visitation after 7 p.m. today, and from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be an 8 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary today and a 3 p.m. parish rosary and 7 p.m. vigil service Monday. Visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
