WATERLOO - Richard Hoveland, 65, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn., from complications of surgery for pancreatic cancer.

He was born May 23, 1944, in Mason City, son of Arnold and Mildred Thiemann Hoveland. He married Joan Van Besien on July 28, 1973, at St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Hoveland graduated from Iowa State University, then went to work as an engineer at John Deere for 36 years, retiring Dec. 31, 2001. He was past president of the John Deere Supervisor’s Club.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, David (Cortney Barron) of Waterloo and Michael of Minneapolis; a brother, Bill (Jan) of Sarona, Wis.; a sister, Susan (Bob) Hastings of Tucson, Ariz.; four brothers-in-law, Jack Finley of Chicago, Richard (Sandy) Van Besien of Waterloo, Bill Schachterle of Ackley and Ed Malek of Ellsworth; four sisters-in-law, Mary Kaye (Bill) Mintline of Colfax, Calif., Carol (Jim) Powell of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Jane (Gene) Zeck of Washington and Jean (Ray) Lynch of West Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a sister, Gloria Finley; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Schachterle and Virginia Malek.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. There will be no visitation at the church on Saturday.
