WATERLOO — Lynn Alan Beckenbaugh, 58, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Thursday, Dec. 3, of cancer.

He was born Aug. 8, 1951, in Waukegan, Ill., son of Clinton and Anita Althoff Beckenbaugh. He married Diane Whannel on Aug. 22, 1997, in Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Beckenbaugh graduated from high school in Bettendorf in 1969, then served in the U. S. Marines during the Vietnam War. He attended Clinton Community College and earned an academic scholarship to attend the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in school psychology. He worked as a school psychologist for AEA 7, which later became AEA 267, for more than 30 years. In 2007 he moved to Cedar Rapids and worked for the Grant Wood AEA, retiring in July of this year.

He was a member of the Black Hawk County Wildlife Organization and the OTD Bike Club, was an active volunteer with Cedar Valley Hospice and received the "Cedar Valley Mayors Volunteer Award" in 2000. While volunteering with Hospice, he participated in the Quincy and Katie Koala Program and worked in grief counseling with both children and adults.

Survived by: his wife; a sister, Camille Schoeberl of Princeton; three brothers, Ronald (Elaine) of Davenport, Michael (Ludi) of Janesville, Wis., and Scot (Linda Hanson) of Indianola; 13 nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: his parents.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Presbyterian Church, with burial in Buckingham Cemetery, both in Traer. Flag-folding rites will be conducted by Traer American Legion. Public visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo.

Memorials: may be directed to Camp Courageous, Animal Welfare Foundation of Iowa and Hospice of Mercy.
