CEDAR FALLS - John Robert Baker, 84, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Nov. 16, at Sartori Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Dubuque, son of Chester Allen and Luella Crop Baker. He married Carol L. Dutcher on Feb. 24, 1952, in Lehigh.

He received his B.A. from the University of Dubuque, his teaching degree from the University of Iowa and his master’s in school administration from Drake. He also attended Iowa State University.

In 1953 he became principal of Ogden Junior High School and in 1954 became elementary principal in Ogden. In 1965 he moved to Cedar Falls and became principal of Southdale and Humbert schools. He became director of education in 1966 for the Cedar Falls Schools, retiring in 1995. Southdale School had its library named after him.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, Jack of Des Moines and Jeffery (Mickey) of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Jody (Dave) Kuhl of Denton, Texas, Jana Baker of Nashville, Tenn., and Julie (Mike) Burger of Mesa, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Florence (Bill) Graham of Florida and Georgia Smith of Nashville.

Preceded in death by: his parents; and an infant brother.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Timothys United Methodist Church, with inurnment at a later date in West Lawn Cemetery, Lehigh. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
