CEDAR FALLS - Sherry D. Sands, 53, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

Sherry was born June 18, 1956, in Waterloo, daughter of Donald C. and Barbara L. Hanzlik Ahlhelm. She married Dave Sands on Aug. 4, 1990, in Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death Nov. 21, 2005.

She graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1974. She worked for Viking Pump from 1979 to 1993 and sold real estate in the Cedar Valley for 19 years.

Survived by: a son, Larry King of Windsor Heights; two stepdaughters, Shelly and Melissa; two grandchildren, Makenzie and Tyler King; five stepgrandchildren, Eugene, Bullet, Courtney, Cheyenne and Dylan; her mother, Barbara Ahlhelm of Waterloo; two brothers, Scott (Rebecca) Ahlhelm of Osage and Joe Ahlhelm of Waterloo; and two sisters, Pam (Jim) Solomon of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., and Becky (Tony) Myers of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by: her grandparents, William and Betty Ahlhelm and Reva and Edward Hanzlik; her father, Donald Ahlhelm; her husband, David Sands; a nephew, Jeremy Ahlhelm; a niece, Jessica Solomon; a sister-in-law, Patty Graham; and a brother-in-law, Larry Graham.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, with burial in Hillside Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Covenant Cancer Treatment Center, Waterloo.

Sherry was an avid viewer of the "Andy Griffith Show" as well as an enthusiastic and proud fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was an active volunteer for the Black Hawk County Democratic Party. Sherry also enjoyed her adventures with her girlfriends, especially the Thursday evening cruises on the SS Manatee. She loved her family and enjoyed many happy times with them, but she especially enjoyed spending time with her son, Larry, and her beloved grandchildren, Makenzie and Tyler.
