WATERLOO - Betty Raye Mether, 85, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home from complications of diabetes.

She was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Waterloo, daughter of Roy and Ethel Parker Bryant. She married Venice Louis Mether on Nov. 18, 1945, at the First Church on the Nazarene, Waterloo. He died Feb. 26, 2004.

Mrs. Mether graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1942. She worked at Davidson's Department Store in downtown Waterloo and retired from Chamberlain Manufacturing in 1990, after 30-plus years of service. She was a member of Cedar Valley Community Church and the Mended Hearts group at Allen Memorial Hospital. During World War II, she volunteered as a hospital candy striper. She enjoyed cooking and baking, flower gardening, reading and listening to old time southern gospel music.

Survived by: two sons, Thomas (Theresa) of Hermitage, Tenn., and Robert (Julie) of rural La Porte City; a daughter, Rhonda (Michael) Deeds of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Gabriel (Cassandra) Mether, Adrian Mether, Eliott Mether, Daniel (Gina) Mether and James Mether; a great-grandson, Wyatt Cody Mether; and two brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Judy) Mether of La Porte City and Lloyd (Virginia) Mether of Clinton, IA.

Preceded in death by: a son, Timothy; and a sister, Virginia Mether.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cedar Valley Community Church, with burial in Gresham Cemetery, rural Klinger. Public visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel and for an hour before services Monday at the church.
