WAVERLY - K.D. Briner, 70, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Cedar Falls and Waverly, died Saturday, Oct. 4.

He was born July 5, 1939, in Waverly, son of Burdett and Doris Lynch Briner. He married Sharon Bodecker in 1960.

Mr. Briner graduated from Waverly High School, attended DePauw University and earned a bachelor's degree from Wartburg College. He taught one year at Parkersburg High School before attending graduate school and teaching at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned his master's degree and later his doctorate. He taught English at Wartburg College for 10 years, then attended law school at the University of Iowa, where he earned his juris doctor. He practiced law in Cedar Rapids before serving in the Black Hawk County Public Defender Office for 10 years. In 1993 he was appointed as an Iowa District Court judge, where he served until his retirement in 2007. During his time as a public defender and judge, he also taught at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and the National Judge's College and served as an adjunct professor at several areas colleges, including Wartburg and UNI. He also was a member of St. Timothy's United Methodist Church.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Karla (Ed) Briner Schaeffer of Kansas City and Kristen Briner of Cedar Falls; and two grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: twin sons, Christopher James and Jonathan Mark; and two brothers, Monte and Dick.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Friday at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls, with private burial in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Public visitation from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly.

Memorials: may be directed to The Sam and Marilyn Michaelson Scholarship Fund at Wartburg College or to the Hunger Fund at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church.
