Martha Holmes Kimpston, 88, of Rosewood Estate, died at Covenant Medical Center on Wednesday, December 5, 2007, of congestive heart failure. 
 
Martha was born October 14, 1919, in Hudson, Iowa, daughter of John J. and Nora (Hager) Holmes.  
 
She graduated from Hudson High School in 1936, received her two-year degree from State Teacher’s College in 1938 and later received her four-year degree from State Teacher’s College in 1948. 
 
She married Howard P. Kimpston on June 12, 1952 in Hudson at her parents’ farm. 
 
Martha was a teacher at Black Hawk County Country School Lincoln #6 and for schools in LeGrand, Dike, Vinton, and Oelwein, Iowa. She also taught at Edison and Lowell Elementary in the Waterloo Community School District until 1955 and after that was a substitute teacher for a number of years in Waterloo.  
 
Martha was an active member of the South Waterloo Church of the Brethren and volunteered in the Blood Bank at the American Red Cross. She had been a member of the 15-30 Club Women of Orange Township and West Orange Township and the Four Seasons Garden Club. She also served on the Election Board for many years. After spending her career teaching science to upper elementary students, Martha had a love for the natural sciences. She enjoyed birds and gardening, pressing many of the flowers she grew.  
 
She is survived by her husband Howard of Rosewood Estate, daughter Martha Louise (Phil) Meyer of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; son William (Paula) of Waterloo; daughter Sue (Tom Burkgren) Kimpston of Perry, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Micah, Paige, James, Nikki, Kelli, Krystal, Robert, Kay and Joey; four great grandchildren: Brady, Victoria, Trevor and Ashley; and nephews: Cecil (Kathleen) Holmes and John “Jack” (Beverly) Holmes, both of Hudson. 
 
Martha is preceded in death by brother Dale Holmes and sister-in-law Grace Holmes.
