Albert B. Schmitt, 81, of Waterloo, died Saturday, August 22, 2009 in the emergency room of Allen Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 20, 1928 in Dewar, son of Albert and Martha Hayes Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt farmed in the Dewar area all his life, retiring in 1990. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was an avid pilot and was Past Commander and Past Chaplain of Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714.
Survivors include: a brother, Robert F. Schmitt of Raymond; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Elaine Holbrook of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: his parents; three brothers, Roger (Mary), Raymond (Bette) and Edmund Schmitt; a sister, Margaret Schmitt (Joe) Frost; a sister-in-law, Mary Schmitt; a niece, Diane Schmitt Middelburg; five nephews, Jim, Tom, Steve and Michael Schmitt and Joseph M. Frost, Jr. in infancy; a great niece, Melissa Schmitt; and a great nephew, Seth Thompson.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Queen Of Peace Catholic Church with burial at 1:00 p.m. in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Barclay Township, where full military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714, Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. Legion Of Mary rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Wednesday.
