Robert F. Schmitt, 89, of Raymond, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at LaPorte City Nursing & Rehab Center.
He was born November 13, 1920 in Dewar, son of Albert and Martha Hayes Schmitt. He married Mary M. Wingert August 25, 1947 in Raymond. She died August 30, 1999.

Mr. Schmitt was a farmer in the Raymond area, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Survivors include: one son, Robert J. (Tammy J. Hoffman) Schmitt of Raymond; six daughters, Mona (Dan) Barz of Center Point, Rosie (Doug) Lindaman of Ackley, Peggy (Jim) Girsch of Washburn, Eileen (Curt) Delagardelle of Waterloo and Mary Jo Schmitt of London, England; 13 grandchildren, Kristine, Kimberly, David, Jeff, Steve, Michael, Brenda, Betsy, Laura, Mallory, Troy, Casey, Caitlin; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Middelburg; four brothers, Roger (Mary), Raymond (Bette), Edmund, and Albert; his sister, Margaret “Peg” (Joseph) Frost.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Raymond, where military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth American Legion, Post 714. Public visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Thursday.
