William A. "Bill" Smidt (1921-2009)

Waterloo, Iowa -- William A. "Bill" Smidt, 88, of Waterloo, died at home Dec. 11 of heart failure.

Bill was born February 1, 1921, in Eldora, son of Engeline Saathoff Rand. He married Mildred Meier Schellhorn on December 21, 1964, in Vinton. She died Aug. 9, 1996.

Mr. Smidt owned and operated Millie's Tap and Cafe and Millie's Maid-Rite for 13 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by two sons, Roger (Betty) Schellhorn of Elk Run Heights and Marvin (Diane) Schellhorn of Waterloo; a grandson; a great-grandson; a brother, George (Evelyn) DeVries of Waverly; and a sister, Henrietta (Raymond) Stickfort of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; two brothers, Harry and Ailt DeVries; and a sister, Henrietta DeVries.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with inurnment at a later date in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Public visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
